Shell's partnership with the Nissan team in the fully electric Formula E racing series allows both companies to develop technologies for furthering projects for electric vehicle customers worldwide. This important union of two leaders helps make electric vehicles more attractive to drivers.
As one of the largest energy suppliers in the world, Shell has a unique ability to use its technologies and expertise to develop cleaner mobility solutions that will serve the growing number of electric vehicle customers. The Nissan Formula E team successfully tested Shell's special e-Transmission Fluid for electronic transmissions. It creates less friction and has anti-corrosion properties, enhancing durability and reliability. The fluid allows the system to deliver more power while consuming less energy, giving the Nissan Formula E team a competitive advantage.
Effective temperature management is key to protecting sensitive electrical components from overheating and ensuring their safe operation. Shell's thermal fluids provide optimal insulation to maximize the performance of electrical equipment and prevent any damage caused by short circuits or leakage current. Thanks to their dielectric properties, thermal fluids provide direct cooling to the electric motor and inverter in the vehicle, resulting in better heat exchange between the heat source and the cooling fluid.
On the track, this partnership will allow the Nissan team to improve efficiency and get closer to the top position on the track. Shell will develop and optimize innovative products and services: from faster and more efficient electric vehicle charging to enhancing Shell E Fluids and Shell E-Greases, a range developed to meet a wide variety of performance requirements. Using Formula E as a testing ground, the company can showcase the advantages of the specially developed transmission fluid for electric vehicles that withstands extreme racing conditions. And further transfer joint innovations from the track to the road as a critically important step in global decarbonization.
